Inspiration #42

Happy Friday! Last week we covered some built-in furniture ideas for the backyard as we prep for new deck space at #L2HQ. We’ve previously looked at some cool backyard fence ideas, but as we get closer to fence time, I thought it would be worth revisiting what the modern horizontal fence might end up like. Here goes!

This is the latest in a weekly post of residential architecture inspiration. If you want to see past weeks, you can go here. If you want to see them curated on my pinterest (sometimes before they even hit the blog), go here.

The staggered widths in this modern horizontal fence break up the height in a nice way. I also like the cap detail that cleans up the overall height drop. I’ll be having to drop the height of my fence because of grade changes along the backyard, so this is definitely something that will come into play.

Another fence with varied widths, but this one gradients to smaller sizes at the top. This is an interesting style that would allow for more privacy in lower sections and more air/openness at standing vision height.

Another modern horizontal fence with a cap. Likely helpful for weathering as well, though I’m not sold on the framing at the ends. Sometimes it’s just as good to see your options so you can see what you don’t like.

This double gate that continues the lines of a modern horizontal fence is framed with smaller end caps that don’t deter from the horizontal lines too significantly. I’ll likely cover gates next week, so stay tuned!

Simple. Clean. Consistent. This modern horizontal fence hits all the marks, and the post rails don’t deter from the horizontals too significantly. I’d love to meet the perfectionist who built this. I’d buy him/her a beer or four.

This modern horizontal fence is so dreamy. I love the grey patina of the wood…the consistency of the spacing…the straight, smooth horizontal lines. Winner, winner.
