Inspiration #34

This week’s inspiration stays in the kitchen. We’ve been looking at counter material details, so this week I thought we’d look at modern kitchens with open shelving systems and dark cabinets. Sometimes it’s nice to have something heavy to ground the eye.

This is the latest in a weekly post of residential architecture inspiration. If you want to see past weeks, you can go here. If you want to see them curated on my pinterest (sometimes before they even hit the blog), go here.

This very simple line of open shelves turns the corner into a set of built-in cabinets which is a glorious detail to its own, made even better by the bright whites of the brick wall turning the corner on the counter and topping a row of modern, dark cabinets.

A transitional design with mid-century flair, these dark cabinets show that a space doesn’t always feel smaller with dark colors. Granted, the whites, marble, and natural light all help.

There’s something about this kitchen that I love, or maybe a multitude of things at work. The dark cabinets have a more traditional feel with the beadboard-style fronts. The grey subway tile is light enough to keep the light bouncing around the room with the sheen of the glazing. The thick wood counter and extruded open shelves….all of it sings together in harmony.

It looks like there’s a winter wonderland outside these windows, but the dark cabinets inside keep the bright space grounded in warmth. The sparse, nordic feel is done in such a way that it feels clean and welcoming, instead of bare and cold. So calming.

Another beautiful kitchen of dark cabinets of the grey wood variety paired with matching open shelves. This design is particularly interesting because the shelves pass by the window, refusing to give up storage for light. The material choices, however, help make sure the light still gets into the space by bouncing off the honed surfaces.

A beautiful set of dark cabinets topped off with warm wood open shelves and bright white subway tile? What more could a girl want? Wine. A girl wants wine – in this kitchen, of course.
