Inspiration #56: Modern Fence Gate

Today’s post is a bit utilitarian, but following up on last week’s modern vertical fence, I’m also researching for a modern fence gate at the alley of #L2HQ. My perspective is that even something entirely utilitarian can be designed well. And, from my research, a well-designed gate that provides access for both humans and vehicles without being overbuilt or gaudy is hard to come by. So let’s take a look at some options!

This is the latest in a weekly post of residential architecture inspiration. If you want to see past weeks, you can go here. If you want to see them curated on my pinterest (sometimes before they even hit the blog), go here.

Let’s just get this out of the way – this modern fence gate is gorgeous. But it’s way out of my budget, takes up more space than I have, and is better suited for a long driveway as compared to my alley abutment.

Now that we have that beauty out of the way, let’s look at some more realistic options that are within a normal budget and fit the surrounding wood fence.

This is a beautifully minimal and modern fence gate. It likely runs on a motor, with a remote switch or occupancy sensor. This moves it somewhat out of the “budget-friendly” category, but I love the clean lines and lack of visible hardware.

A similar horizontal fence pattern that carries onto the gate, this is a much more approachable design without sacrificing quality. The downside to this modern fence gate is that there’s no door for human access, so every entry must be through the larger gate swing. The drive/pad behind this gate also has to be relatively long to be able to allow the swing + a parked car.

This modern fence gate provides visual security in all the right ways while allowing both pedestrian and vehicle access. Granted, this gate looks like it’s on a slider, not a hinge, but we’re headed in the right direction!

Bringing metal into the mix, this hinged modern fence gate combines the horizontal wood with a sturdy metal frame. Sometimes metal can be hard on a budget, but there are times where you overbuild trying to use wood and could achieve a cleaner look with metal – and this might be one of them.

While it looks like this fence provides only pedestrian access, it would be relatively easy to adapt and create a hinged opening for vehicles with the larger section to the left in the picture. It’s clean, safe, and well-designed!
