Inspiration #63: Coastal backyard

It seems like I’m not the only one who enjoyed last week’s inspiration escape, so we’re returning this week with a look at larger bodies of water – coastal backyards! From the Atlantic around to the Pacific, the Baltic down to Lion’s Head, each coastal backyard today has great architecture and a breathtaking view. So sit back, relax, grab a drink, and imagine yourself somewhere below.

This is the latest in a weekly post of residential architecture inspiration. If you want to see past weeks, you can go here. If you want to see them curated on my pinterest (sometimes before they even hit the blog), go here.

The Hagerty House by Walter Gropius was ahead of its time in 1938, and this coastal backyard still shines in its timeless simplicity. The plain geometry of the white exterior allows the home to sit quietly, letting the beauty of nature speak in its vibrance. I’d love to see the sunsets from here each day, wouldn’t you?

Across the Atlantic and almost as south as you can go on the African continent, SAOTA provide this coastal backyard that opens up to the mountains and sky and sea in equal measure. So much beauty in a single image; how wonderful it would be to soak in this view.

This coastal backyard in the Bahamas by Heliotrope creates a home that opens up to embrace the island’s nature while protecting it from the Atlantic winds and near-equatorial sun. I can picture myself relaxing on the sofa swing with a book or enjoying fresh-caught food with family and friends while letting the cool island breezes flow through the open house.

The Rock House by Widjedal Racki is the perfect mixture of manmade rock (concrete) and (seemingly) weightless glass growing from the rocky cliffs surrounding Lake Mälaren. It opens to a coastal backyard, giving the owners an ability to choose a view of nature, or an experience in nature; a beneficial option in the sometimes unforgiving weather of Sweden. Me? I’ll take a drink after work or a book and this view any day.

Only slightly lower in latitude, the Lone Madrone by Heliotrope also nestles itself in the rocks of the San Juan Islands. I can imagine a cup of coffee on a chilly morning, the sun warming the floor as the breeze flows in the afternoon, and the warmth of the wood as I relax at the end of a long day. Yes, please.

Providing protected space for outdoor relaxation during inclement weather, the H House by Widjedal Racki frames multiple views of the coastal backyard, depending on the mood or scene you want to take in. Me, personally – I’ll take this outdoor living room and a glass of wine to celebrate being halfway through the week. Happy Wednesday, everyone!
